CMI growth rates for Saturnian kilometric radiation
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] We calculate growth rates for extraordinary mode Saturnian kilometric radiation generated by the electron cyclotron maser instability using a ring‐type (DGH) electron phase distribution model fitted to measured electron energy dist r ibut ions in Saturn’s auroral acceleration region. The observed distributions are unstable in spatially isolated regions of transverse linear size of order 10 km. Each unstable region has a growth rate consistent with amplification of background radiation to the peak observed intensity, approximately 14 electric field e‐foldings. The observed propagation direction and frequency decrement below the electron cyclotron frequency are also consistent with the CMI growth model. Citation: Mutel, R. L., J. D. Menietti, D. A. Magnetic field studies by voyager 2: preliminary results at saturn.
Further studies of the Saturnian magnetosphere and planetary magnetic field by Voyager 2 have substantiated the earlier results derived from Voyager 1 observations in 1980. The magnetic field is primarily that of a centered dipole (moment = 0.21 gauss-RS(3); where one Saturn radius, RS, is 60,330 kilometers) tilted approximately 0.8 degrees from the rotation axis. Near closest approach to Satur...

We calculate growth rates and corresponding gains for RX and LO mode radiation associated with the cyclotron maser instability for parameterized horseshoe electron velocity distributions. The velocity distribution function was modeled to closely fit the electron distribution functions observed in the auroral cavity. We systematically varied the model parameters as well as the propagation direct...
متن کاملStriated AKR Emission: A Remote Tracer of Ion Solitary Structures
We describe the statistical properties of narrowband drifting auroral kilometric radiation (’striated’ AKR) based on observations from the Cluster wideband receiver during 2002-2005. We show that the observed characteristics, including frequency drift rate and direction, narrow bandwidth, observed intensity, and beaming angular sizes are all consistent with triggering by upward traveling ion so...
متن کاملA Coherent Nonlinear Theory of Auroral Kilometric Radiation, 1. Steady State Model
A theory of auroral kilometric radiation due to the nonlinear interaction between negative energy electromagnetic waves and coherent electrostatic ion cyclotron waves is developed. The theory predicts that such radiation produced must have X mode polarization and must have a frequency that lies in a narrow band between the right-hand cutoff and the Doppler-shifted beam cyclotron frequency for e...
متن کاملPlanetary radio astronomy observations from voyager 2 near saturn.
Planetary radio astronomy measurements obtained by Voyager 2 near Saturn have added further evidence that Saturnian kilometric radiation is emitted by a strong dayside source at auroral latitudes in the northern hemisphere and by a weaker source at complementary latitudes in the southern hemisphere. These emissions are variable because of Saturn's rotation and, on longer time scales, probably b...
